That Pesky Apostrophe in It’s!
It’s a bugbear of mine…
Not a serious one…
But a bugbear nonetheless,
and it’s actually quite easy to remember…
So here goes…
It is about the meaning of it’s!
It’s simply
“It is”…
Or
“It has”…
… Nothing else…
Ever!
As in…
It’s a dull day meaning, It is a dull day
Or
It’s been a dull day meaning, It has been a dull day.
Every other time
Use its…
Just three little letters
Without the pesky apostrophe!
If in doubt,
Say the sentence out loud using “it is” or “it has”
If it sounds odd…
Then use its!
It’s
that
simple!
Excellent advice – must show it to Geoff and many others! Could easily eat the oranges. Mum
It’s given a whole new meaning to eating oranges as well, Love Geoff
